Gift dice indicate the influence of the protagonist’s self-control and skill on the outcome of a conflict. When gift dominates, regardless of success or failure, the situation remains under control, and the use of skill and focus rule the day.
This has the game effect of allowing the player to decrease his current fixation score by one or remove a check mark (see Twilight) from his twilight track. The player is not obligated to make use of this privilege; sometimes he’ll want to keep his fixation right where it is.
When a player chooses to roll only gift dice, that player may choose to narrate his result as mundane efforts rather than magical. Of course, if he has any fixation or permanent curse dice, that option is no longer available. Once you start using magic to solve your problems it is very difficult to stop.
