All protagonists (player characters) are members of the loosely maintained but vastly powerful organization known as The Order. Membership in The Order is not voluntary, though most members make peace with their situation and accept that The Order generally works for the greater good.
Each protagonist was once a normal person. They may have been the sixth daughter of a peasant family, raised to work the soil, or they may have been the eldest son of a wealthy landowner, trained to lead. Regardless of where they came from, the gift (and curse) of magical power has now separated them from normal society. The Gift manifests at some point in early life, usually around 8 or 9 years old, but as old as 18 or 19 in rare cases.
When the Gift manifests, it does so in a disruptive and often violent way. In response to that manifestation, the protagonist may have been:
- Expelled from her former life – often violently.
- Threatened by family, friends, and/or members of the church.
- Visited by extraplanar entities.
Many people who experience a manifestation of the Gift do not survive it. Unlike those fortunate souls, your protagonist not only survived, but came to the attention of The Order. Representatives of The Order recruited, convinced, threatened, and/or kidnapped your protagonist and forced them to submit to a rigorous training and indoctrination program – for their own good, of course.
Full members of The Order are usually referred to as wizards, but they don’t necessarily conform to the classic “robe-wearing guy with a scroll case and a pointy hat” image. While most wizards do scorn the use of mundane armour and weapons, it is only because their magic makes such things pointless. A wizard who wields a powerful magic sword or axe, however, may be outwardly indistinguishable from a mundane warrior; at least until he starts hurling fireballs, that is.
